Another easy DIY furniture transformation

Everyone who knows me knows I love a good DIY, like my fabulous nursery letters and my drab to fab kitchen. Aside from knitting and small crafting, it's been a while since I've done a big project. Until now.

I had an old IKEA bookshelf that needed a makeover. Thanks to Pinterest and some creativity, I was able to transform it into a trendy piece that is functional and stylish. The key to this DIY was it was going to cost me less than $50. I used leftover paint and only had to purchase the material for my backing.

Want to see some magic?

Here's what I started with: a honey coloured wood cabinet. After a light sanding and two coats of paint (Muslin, Benjamin Moore), we removed the soft backing. Note: don't paint the cabinet with the shelves on.

I bought a lovely tapestry-like fabric that cost $32 on sale. On one side, the medallions are gold and silver, but on the flip side, the fabric has various shades of grey and beige doily-like shapes. It's a versatile fabric that has a rich look and feel. I opted to use fabric instead of wallpaper; I thought it would be easier, less cutting and less mess. I was right.

We ended up going with the gold/silver side versus the grey side.

To secure the fabric, we wrapped it tightly around the backing and re-nailed it back into place, all the while ensuring we stretched the fabric equally and there were no wrinkles or creases. This is a job that needs two people - so make sure you have some help. Once the fabric is in place, you can replace the shelves and you're done!

Isn't it amazing what some paint, fabric and some inspiration can do? This bookshelf is now going to be home to my photo albums and special memories.

What's your next DIY project?

  1. Wow, stunning! I love the use of the fabric on the back of the cabinet. The pattern is bold but classic. I'm inspired to try this too!

  2. I love the transformation! Is your bookshelf solid wood? I've always wanted to repaint the bookshelves we have from IKEA but ours are the laminate kind so I'm not sure if paint is going to stick on that kind of surface.

My next project - painting a headboard for DS. He is moving to a big boy bed soon! First I need to find a headboard ;)

  3. That is amazing! I love IKEA, but must say your "after" is definitely what I prefer.

  4. LOVE this! I wish I remembered things like this when I want a certain piece for my house. I always wander around stores and don't find what I want. If I created it myself, I definitely would!

    Pinning this idea for later.
