In my family, December 1st marked the "official" countdown to Christmas. Actually, yesterday, November 30th, was the start of Advent, marking 4 weeks until Christmas Day.
On December 1st (or close to it), I remember decorating the tree, lighting the first candle on our advent wreath, putting up our stockings, and even digging into a chocolate advent calendar. We've continued most of these traditions, but also added a new one: The Elf on the Shelf.
The Elf on the Shelf is a fairly new Christmas Tradition, where Santa and Mrs. Claus enlist the help of a scout elf, who you name, to watch over your family before Christmas Eve. Our Elf's name is Alfie, and boy is he a mischievous little guy, as most elves are!
Tomorrow morning, we will read this story to Isabelle and Alfie will be somewhere in our home, waiting to be found. Each night, he will fly home to Santa and Mrs. Claus to report back and every morning he'll be in a new spot. Last year, we found him hanging from the chandelier, on top of the window sill, and even in the bathroom! On Christmas morning, Alfie will fly home for another year, but we're lucky to have him around for another 24 days.
It's a fun and silly little tradition, but also encourages the "he sees you when you're sleeping" bit!
Do you have any Christmas traditions that start on December 1st? Do you have an Elf on the Shelf? Where have you found your elf hiding?
