Mr. Dak -- The Tale of the Special Turtle

“The more that you read, the more things you will know.
The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” – Dr. Seuss

In our home, we have hundreds of books, and that number keeps growing and growing. Both Donny and I established our own libraries over the years, and then, a little library for each daughter when she was born. Every year, we buy piles of books and I, for one, can't go into a bookstore without at least opening up a few. (I usually buy them too!)

Reading is a gift; a chance to learn, unwind, reflect. In fact, I don't read nearly as much as I used to. But we do read with our kids every single day. That's why when authors and publishers ask if they can send me a new book, I'm all ears -- and eyes!

Mr. Dak is a story about a grandpa turtle who wore colourful sweaters, played Bingo with his friends and snacked on bananas. But it's also a story written for a young boy who never got to meet his great-grandfather. It's easy to understand, lighthearted, and beautifully illustrated. In her first book, local author Dayna Saba, wrote Mr. Dak: The Tale of a Special Turtle, to highlight the experience of love and loss within families, and the importance of cherishing the memories we create with each other.

"Mr. Dak is something so dear to my heart," she writes. "This book was a way grief support when I was going through such a difficult time in my life. I vowed that I would never lose the memory of how important my love and relationship with my grandfather was, and how I would use that experience for a way of educating and support for others."
In addition to being an author, Dayna is also an OCAD grad, certified Usui Reiki Master and the founder of Friends League Toronto, a local non-profit that fosters community through physical activity. With her new series, Tales of a Honeydoo, Dayna hopes to provide children with tools to help their mental, emotional, physical and spiritual growth. Mr. Dak is available at Indigo and online. E-versions also available.
