As we head into a new year and a new decade, we are always trying to equip our kids with new information, lessons, experiences and products/toys that will engage and enlighten.
Recently, Mattel released a new line of dolls called CreatableWorld. CreatableWorld dolls are 11-inch fashion dolls that come with a variety of accessories and clothing: from dresses to jeans to skirts, purses and hair.
CreatableWorld is also the first line of gender non-conforming dolls. They allow all kids to be creative and play and give children the freedom to dress and be whomever they choose. Creatable World dolls are available exclusively at Mastermind Toys in Canada.
When I presented the box to my kids, I didn't really plan on having a serious talk about gender differences or the trans community, and, admittedly, I probably used pronouns incorrectly, but when I gave my girls the doll, I wasn't only impressed by their reaction, but proud.
Isabelle (7) said she saw the dolls online in a video and you can make them into "boys or girls". I think I said something like -- "Yes, and people are free to be whoever they want to be and wear whatever they want to wear."
She smiled and said, "You're right, mommy."
And that was the end of the discussion.
So, obviously a very high-level, age-appropriate chat about gender identity, but an important step, nonetheless. I want my kids to know that regardless of what you look like, what you wear, if you associate with a particular gender or not, that you are free to choose and be whomever you like -- and that our family accepts that.
