Mental health check, mamas: how we doing today?
Feeling a bit like you've been kicked down again? Me too.
Honestly, a couple of weeks ago, I was very optimistic, and there seemed to be "light at the end of the tunnel", as many people have said.
Today, I'm not so sure.
Don't get me wrong -- I am in support of today's announcement that kids will learn remotely. I'm not surprised by it either. It will be challenging, as it has always been, but I believe it's the right thing to do. While my family has engaged in in-person learning all year -- (and I think it's what we all need) -- I also recognize that the tides have shifted. I personally know people -- young people -- in the hospital. This is no joke.
But the mental load and the back and forth is almost too much. We've all shouldered much more than we already did. And it's hard. The unknown, the constant shifting, the loss of income, the desire and longing to see our family and friends.
Over the last year, I"ve partnered with various organizations and groups to discuss or promote Women's Mental Health.
It's OK not to be OK all the time.
It's OK to have dirty dishes or an unmade bed.
It's OK to give the kids a day off.
it's OK to give yourself one.
I've just signed up for the Run for Women. It's an annual event (now virtual), that supports Markham Stouffville Hospital's Mental Health Programs. While it's listed as a Unionville event, this is actually York Region's event -- and because it's virtual, you can participate anywhere. It's a 5K or 10K -- walk or run anytime between July 4-11.
The Run for Women, brought to you by the LOVE YOU by Shoppers Drug Mart program will enable Markham Stouffville Hospital to confront York Region’s mental health crisis with a program that addresses the unique obstacles that women in our increasingly diverse community face on the path to wellness.
Registration is currently $40 (price goes up to $45 at midnight on April 15), but you also get a swag bag valued at $150 that can be picked up at the end of June/early July. You can also fundraise and help spread the word.
Want to join my team? I'd love to have you help promote this cause and raise funds together.
